Baxters of Woodbridge
Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a market town on the banks of the river Deben, eight miles north east of Ipswich. The church of St Mary the Virgin was built in the reign of Edward III. Thomas Sekforde esq. benefactor of the town was buried here. The church of St John the Evangelist was erected in 1842 at a cost of £3,500. The church was consecrated in 1846 and the registers date from that year. Other churches include the Catholic Church dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury, a Congregational Chapel, a Wesleyan Chapel and a Friends Meeting House. A cemetery south-west of the town was consecrated in 1856 and covered around 5 acres at the time.

| The Ipswich Journal | 21 Oct 1887 | Colchester Alarming Fire. – On Sunday evening a fire broke out on the premises of Mr. Baxter, Military road, Colchester, which resulted in the destruction of the house and shop. About 10.30 William Oliver, landlord of a public-house near by, noticed smoke issuing from the building, and subsequently a glare. He at once gave an alarm, and the fire bugle at the camp being sounded, the men of the Northumberland Fusiliers and Somerset Regiment turned out promptly to render assistance. The military fire engine was got out quickly, and at once rendered valuable assistance. A detachment of constables called the turncocks and the firemen of both fire brigades, who rapidly assembled at the scene of the conflagration. At 11 p.m. the Essex and Suffolk Brigade, under Conductors Johnson and Jennings, arrived on the spot, and found the premises completely enveloped in flames. The Volunteer Fire Brigade, under the superintendence of Capt. Howe, arrived just after the Essex and Suffolk Brigades, and both got their engines playing vigorously on the flames. The flames, however, had gained too strong a hold, and the cottage was burned to the ground. The premises were the property of Mr, T. Raven, of Butt-road, Colchester. Mr Baxter’s stick was insured for £100 in the Manchester Equitable Insurance Company, and consisted of grocers and green groceries. Mr. Baxter was not on the premises at the time of the outbreak. While pluckily attempting to subdue the flames, a private of the Northumberland Fusiliers fell from the roof of a house adjoining the burning premises, and fractured a limb. A word of commendation is due to the military for their promptness, which doubtless prevented the spread of the flames to the adjoining premises. |

This was none other than the marriage of Frederick William Baxter, only son of Mr E. P. Baxter, of the Swann Inn, Bures St Mary, to Lucy second daughter of Mr George Norman, Sen. Fishmonger, of Eye. The ceremony was performed at the parish church in the presence of a numerous congregation by the Rev. W. H. Chambers (M.A.) curate. The bride was the happy recipient of a large number of presents. The Misses E and A Norman (sisters of the bride) attended as bridesmaids. |

| Suffolk and Essex Free Press | 05 Aug 1948 | BURES LOSES WELL KNOWN RESIDENT BY the death, at the age of 74, of Mrs. Lucy Baxter, of the Vicarage Cottage, the village of Bures has lost one of its best known residences. Widow of Mr. Frederick Baxter, for many years licenses of the Swann Inn, and whoses parents had held the license since 1881. Mrs. Baxter was a native of Yarmouth. She leaves five sons, two daughters, seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The Vicar, the Rev. N .C. Stephenson officiated at the funeral service at St. Mary’s Church, where, Mrs. Baxter had attended regularly and several of her fellow members of the Mother’s Union were among the congregation. Family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Page Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. George Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. William Baxter and Mr. and Mrs. B. Baxter (sons and daughters-in-law). Mrs. M. Keeble and Mrs. L. Cudmore (daughters). Mr. and Mrs. C. Norman (brother and sister-in-law). Miss A. Norman (sister). Mr. John Norman (nephew). Mr. Frank Cudmore, Mr. Norman Cudmore, Mr David Keeble (grandsons). Miss P.
