Baxters of Beccles

Beccles

Beccles is mainly a Georgian town built on the river Waveney. It was once a busy port with lock free access to the sea. Industry included a large print works and farming. The town was rebuilt after four great fires in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. The church is dedicated to St Michael, the interior of which was destroyed by fire in 1586; the parish registers date back to that year.

Early Baxters

Beccles is on the navigable river Waveney and at the time was a commercial hub of activity, which may explain the appearance and disappearance of the various Baxter families that lived in Beccles during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Where ever possible I have attempted to maintain family groupings. I have provided a list of baptism, marriages and burials which have no family connection to each other.

Elizabeth married twice, her first husband was Charles Wright (1708-1745) possibly the son of John Wright and Martha Belson. From the parish registers of Beccles:

Elizabeth’s second husband was John Mutton (1697 – 1777) the son of Thomas and Anne Mutton. From the parish registers of Loddon:
“John Mutton of this parish widower and Elizabeth Wright of this parish widow were married in this church by banns this twentysecond day of June 1760. In the presence of George Hotson and John Todd.”

John Baxter and Elizabeth Dunham

The following is speculation on my part. John could be the John Baxter mentioned in the Michaelmas Suffolk Quarter Sessions of 1792, as supplying evidence against Spratt a dealer in new and second hand clothes at Beccles. John was described as “a very poor man and a mender of shoes.”

John Baxter (d.1711) described as a shoemaker and Ann Watts (d.1749) had a son John in 1698 mentioned above. John of 1698 may have been the John single man who married the widow Mary Beals in 1731, mentioned below in the Beccles Marriages. They could be the parents of John baptized the 09 Jan 1731/2, Lowestoft St Margaret the son of John and Mary Baxter. The John above could be John of 1732.

Martha married Alfred Fisher (1849 – 1924), the son of James Fisher and Mary Golder in 1885.

Mary Ann (Ellen Matilda) Baxter (1851 – 1924)

It would appear that both Martha and Mary Ann attended The House of Mercy, Ditchingham, Norfolk where they received training as domestic servants. Both Martha and Mary Ann were baptized as adults and they were able to choose additional middle names not registered on their birth certificates. Martha choose Gladys, whereas Mary Ann seems to have decided to change her name completely to Ellen Matilda. This has made tracing Mary Ann very difficult, I found her in the 1871 census under the name Ellen Baxter. She is not the Ellen Matilda Baxter that married Jonas Chambers in the Hoxne district, this Ellen was born in 1855 Tannington, the daughter of John Baxter and Eliza Stoggins.

*The matron was called Matilda Thomas and she was from Bawdsey in Suffolk. She may have been Matilda Beeton nurse at the Strand Union Workhouse and Rothehithe Workhouse Infirmary, whose allegations in 1866 were reported in the House of Commons, the debate led to the passing of the Metropolitan Poor Act, 1867.

I have found a possible marriage for Mary Ann/Ellen Matilda which is highly speculative. On the 31st May 1874 at St Nicholas parish church Liverpool, Ellen Clark (1851 – 1924) of full age, spinster of Frederick Street, daughter of Robert Clark, maltster married Lawrence McElligott (c.1831 – 1902), of full age, bachelor, mariner, of Frederick Street, son of Patrick McElligott, soldier, in the presence of Thomas & Ann McDonough.
Mary Ellen as she was called in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses claims to have been born in Beccles, Suffolk, but in 1911 she appears as Ellen Mc Elligott servant 59 yrs, widow, domestic of Limerick Ireland, Limerick was where her husband Lawrence was born and I believe this was an error on the part of the head of the household. I can find no evidence of Mary Ellen/Ellen Mary Clark/e birth been registered, baptism or census record or a Robert Clark/e who was a maltster in Suffolk. There is also no sign of Mary Ellen/Ellen Mary with a father Robert living in Liverpool prior to 1874. Whereas Mary Ann/ Ellen Matilda Baxter’s father was called Robert and was a Maltster. This would suggest that there was something wrong with the information provided by Mary Ellen.
Mary had a daughter Mary Agnes McElligott/Elligott/Elliott in 1874, she married Michael Joseph Tubby in 1896.

Honor was born on the 9 March 1860, baptized 03 Apr 1860 the daughter of Mary Ann Bond at the parish church of St Nicholas Great Yarmouth. The 1861 census shows Honor Bond age 1 visiting Bridget and her daughter Elizabeth Hall at Row 51 no. 7, Yarmouth. By 1871 Elizabeth Hall has married Charles Challis Bracey and Elizabeth’s adopted sister Honor aged 11, surname now Farman, were living at Row 51 no. 1 Yarmouth. The Farman surname could be an indication of Honor/Annie’s father’s surname. In 1881 Charles and Elizabeth Bracey are still living at Row 51 no.1 and Annie Baxter the married sister of Elizabeth was living with them. I’m not sure why Honor changed her name to Annie.

	1962	Death at 89 of Mr. Harry Baxter The death occurred on Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital, Bury St. Edmund’s, of Mr. Harry Baxter, who lived at Beccles for many years, then retired to Brome and later to Bury. He was 89. As a young man Mr. Baxter was a keen rugby player, representing Beccles and Suffolk. He was employed as a boilermaker at the Beccles Ingate Iron Works of Elliott & Garrood Ltd. for about 30 years. The father of Mr. Baxter was a well-known marshman. Mr. Baxter lived at Denmark Road, and Rook’s Lane for a time until he and his wife set up a boarding-house at Saltgate. Mrs. Baxter, who is now in hospital at Bury, became one of the first women magistrates to serve on the Beccles Bench. She was also on the Board of Management of Beccles Co-operative Society for a long time.

Mr. H. Hopson made the presentation in felicitous terms, and with best wishes, which were heartily endorsed by the numerous friends present.
	05 Sep 1899	ALBERT BAXTER The portrait in this column will be easily recognized. A thorough sportsman, Albert Baxter was not only a skilful footballer, but a reliable batsman and bowler. He captained the senior football team two seasons ago, and shared the honours in winning the county cup three times, and the North Suffolk League cup once. Beccles is proud of him, but he has just married a wife and says “I cannot come” to his friends who would fain see him at his old place as full back to Beccles Caxton. He has promised, however, to help, if the occasion offers, to win the Suffolk Cup once more.
	1961	FUNERAL OF FORMER BECCLES SPORTSMAN Mr. Albert Baxter, of 82, St. John’s Road, Ipswich, the former Beccles sportsman, was cremated at Ipswich yesterday. Mr. Baxter was prominent in the East Anglian sporting world towards the end of the last and the beginning of this century. He was the holder of six Suffolk senior football cup medals. Born at Beccles in 1875, Mr Baxter was apprenticed to Messrs. William Clowes & Sons Ltd. in their stereotyping department. He was left-back for several seasons in the Beccles Caxton football team and during the period he was with them, the team figured in four county cup finials. He also played in a number of county matches. Mr. Baxter often headed the batting averages for the Caxton Cricket Club and in 1895 faced the bowling of the famous Gilbert Jessop. On leaving Beccles in 1900, Mr. Baxter went to Norwich and played football for the C. E. Y. M. S. before moving to Ipswich a year later. At Ipswich he was employed by Messrs. W. S. Cowell Ltd., lithographers, printers and stationers. He joined Ipswich Town F. C. and played in three senior cup finals, being on the winning side on each occasion. Mr. Baxter married before leaving Beccles and is survived by his widow. Immediate mourners were Mr. and Mrs. S. Hunter, Mrs. E. R. Bolton, Mrs. E. Porter and Mrs. E. Nursey. The widow was unable to attend.

	1954	Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Baxter’s golden day One of the best known figures in local sport on Friday celebrated his golden wedding. He is Mr. Charles Baxter, who, with his charming wife, lives at 7, Campbell-road Gravesend. They were married at Reading in 1904. Mr. Baxter served his apprenticeship in the machine department at the Beccles Caxton Press of Wm. Cowes and Sons, Ltd. Seeking more experience, he went to Reading and then came to Gravesend in 1909. Here he became a valued member of staff of the Harmsworth Press, later the Amalgamated Press. Mr. Baxter served on the Firm’s athletic club for nearly 30 years, some of them as Chairman. During the first World War he served in France with the Royal Engineers and was gassed during a heavy German attack. A serious illness involving spells in hospital have marred his retirement, which began in 1949, but a cheerful optimism has enabled Mr. Baxter to enjoy life with his family and friends. His wife has reasonably good health. In addition to a son and daughter, they have three grandchildren.

Chaston, on the body of Frances Baxter, aged 3 years. – Elizabeth Baxter, wife of Jacob Baxter, Marshman said: I live on the Common. The deceased was a healthy child, and had never required medical attendance. I am the mother of eight children, seven of whom are alive and well. Deceased partook of her food and seemed as usual up to 11 p.m. on Thursday, when she became restless and hot, my husband took her into our bed. On Friday, about noon, I gave her one of the aperient (Sic) fever powders sold by Andrews Bros Chemists, Norwich, after which she became sick. On Saturday noon I gave her some caster oil. She only partook of beef tea that day. I put her to bed at a little past seven p.m.: she then seemed no worse, and I did not consider her seriously ill. A change came over her at six a.m. on Sunday she ground her teeth and rolled her eyes, and she died while I was nursing her about half an hour later. I should have sent for medical aid had I thought it necessary. – The husband of witness corroborated the fore going evidence. – Wm Taylor McComb said: I am assistant to Messrs Crowfoot, surgeon, Beccles. I have externally examined the body of deceased and found no marks of violence. Taking into consideration the evidence I attribute death to inflammation of the lungs and convulsions. I cannot tell if I could have done any good if I had been called in. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
