Baxters of Heveningham

Early Baxters
Baxters appear in Heveningham in Tudor times. Dame Margery Baxter took a vow of chastity and became a vowess in 1533, which meant as a widow she took the veil, but remained in her own home. She is recorded in the Suffolk subsidies return of 1524, being taxed £30 in goods, on property in Kelsale cum Carlton. Also mentioned is a John Page alias Baxter, who bequeathed his estate at Carlton to be sold and a yearly payment of £3 to the poor of Dunwich and £2 pounds to the poor of Laxfield be made.
I have include a list of burials and marriages for Heveningham and Ubbeston which currently have no known family connection.

| The Ipswich Journal | 16 Mar 1872 | Halesworth Petty Session – Wednesday March 13th Raffling – Caution – John Baxter of Cookley was charged with having, on the 17th February, at Cookley, unlawful and knowingly suffered a certain lottery not authorized by Parliament (to wit) raffling with dice for pork sausages in his house. On the night of Saturday, the 17th, defendant had a raffle in his house for pork and sausages; it was attended by several persons who raffled with dice, and defendant took the money. Defendant pleaded ignorance of the law. The chairman said: The Bench are determined to put a stop to these raffles; and if it had been shown you had been cautioned, we should have punished you more severely than we are about to do. Ignorance is no plea for breaking the law, and the sentence on you is that you be convicted as a rogue and vagabond, and imprisoned in Ipswich Gaol, and kept to hard labour for the space of six days. |
