Baxters of Oulton
Oulton
Oulton is two miles from Lowestoft and a mile from Oulton Broad fed by the river Waveney. The church is dedicated to St Michael and the lich gate was built by Colin Baxter in the 1940’s using only hand tools.

John Baxter (1769 – 1813)
Marriage
John married Elizabeth Jefferies. John was Elizabeth second husband, her first husband was John Danby. From the parish registers of Oulton:
“John Baxter of the parish of Oulton single man and Elizabeth Danby widow of the same parish were married this sixth day of November, 1809. In the presence of John Bull and Phebe Jefferies.”
Banns of marriage were read out between William Youngman widower and Elizabeth Baxter widow, Lowestoft St Margaret in March and April 1817. The couple married in Norwich the following year.

Mary Baxter (1815 – 1904)
Marriage
Mary married John Butcher (c.1815 – 184?). From the parish registers of Lowestoft St Margaret:
“John Butcher bachelor and Mary Baxter spinster both of this parish were married in this church by banns on this fifth day of September, 1836. In the presence of Matthew Butcher, Ann Butcher, Mary Ann Gillings and William Bobbitt.”
In both the 1841 and 1851 census Mary was recorded living on the beach at Lowestoft. I suspect that John was a fisherman, no death was registered for him, so I believe he was lost at sea sometime between 1840 and 1851.
Mary’s second marriage was to John Daines son of John Daines.

| The Ipswich Journal | 11 Aug 1860 | Lowestoft Petty Session, Wednesday August 8th Assault – William Baxter and William Eccleston were charged with assaulting William Smith of Somerleyton, on the 2nd last. Complainant stated that he had been down, on the evening in question, with the horse of his master, Mr Benns, to wash, and on coming home overtook a party of mowers, with whom the defendants were in company, and without provocation on his part, Baxter pushed him off the wall into the ditch, which was up to his thigh in water. Baxter asked him where he had been and he told him. He did not speak until after Baxter had pushed him into the ditch, when he complained, asked him what he did it for, when defendant laughed. Eccleston came up afterwards and got hold of him, and beat him with his fists. Complainant had a piece of red tied around his hat, and said “red n” couldn’t get along with the “blue.” That was all the conversation he had with them. Baxter in defence, stated that complaint went up to him and said, “Baxter, you look rather blue.” Defendant turned his eyes over his shoulder, and seeing the complainant had a piece of red on his hat said. “blue and red never agree.” At the same time giving him (complainant) a push as he passed by; but he never went into the ditch. … Upon recommendation of the chairman, the parties left the court and subsequently arrange the matter in dispute. |

Robert Baxter (1823 – 1913)
As a mariner, Robert does not appear in the 1841 or 1851 censuses and it is believed Robert emigrated to Australia in around 1852. On the 27th October, 1874, Robert was admitted to the Maryborough Hospital, records show he was 51, married, his occupation was a Mariner, the name of the ship was Orpheus, he had been living in the colony for 23 years and had embarked from the Port of San Francisco.

| The Ipswich Journal | 11 Feb 1843 | Inquest – On Tuesday last, at Oulton, on view of the body of Mary Ann Baxter, aged 4 years. This is another instance added to the many constantly occurring of the lives of children being sacrificed to the careless habit of leaving them in a room where there is a fire, without due care being taken to prevent accident. In this case it does not appear the child had been left more than five minutes, but on her mother’s return she found the deceased wrapped in flames, and so dreadfully burnt that she survived about two hours only. | The Ipswich Journal | 07 Apr 1883 | Petty Sessions: Lowestoft Wednesday April 4th Refusing to Quit – James Baxter and James Burwood, fishermen, were charged with refusing to quit the licensed premises of Elijah Edwards, Commercial Road, when ordered to do so by the land lord. Complainant said defendants came into his house the worse for drink, and he refused to supply them with anything. They became abusive, and he ordered them out two or three times, which they refused to do. They were now at sea. Inspector Jefferies informed the Bench the men were obliged to go and were sorry for what they had done, and hoped they would hear the case in their absence. Defendants were fined 10s each, including costs. |
| Lowestoft Journal | 01 Jul 1899 | LOWESTOFT POLICE WHERE WAS HE James Baxter, carter, of Lowestoft, was summoned for leaving his horse unattended in Commercial Road on Saturday evening last. P. C. A Read said he saw defendant’s horse and cart standing outside the Bank Stores in Commercial Road for 15 minutes – from 6.45 to 7. Defendant was in the Bank Stores during this time. This the defendant denied. He was not in the Bank Stores at all. He was at Kessingland at a quarter pass 6. P. C. Botwright was called and he stated that he saw the cart outside the Bank Stores for quite 10 minutes, and then he put the constable on to watch. Defendant again said he knew nothing about it. He did not get from Kessingland till 7 30. As he did not particularly wish for the case to be adjourned, he was fined 7s. 6d. |
| Lowestoft Journal | 15 Sep 1906 | ABUSIVE CAB DRIVER James Baxter, pony car driver, of Kirkley was summoned for leaving his horse and cart unattended in Lovewell Road for 25 minutes on September 1st. P. C. Bladry said he saw the animal standing outside a house in Lovewell Road for the time stated. Witness has to {return} three times before the defendant came and when he did he used obscene language to witness and continued it in the road for some 15 minutes afterwards. Defendant denied that he used bad language and stated that he was waiting for an invalid lady, for whom he was told to wait one hour. Albert Brown said he saw the horse and cart at the same spot at 8.15 p.m. and it remained till 8.45. Defendant swore at the policeman. Fined 15s, including costs, or 10 days. |
