Baxters of Wangford
Wangford
Wangford is three miles from Southwold, named after the stream the Wang that flows through it. Its economy was largely driven by agriculture. The church is dedicated to St Peter, a perpendicular church with embattled tower and flint covered exterior.

I have found Emily in three census returns and in each she describes herself as a widow. I have been unable to discover a marriage for her and she is buried with her sister Esther Baxter.

| The Suffolk Chronicle | 09 Feb 1867 | Petty Sessions – February 6 Assault – George Baxter, labourer, was charged with having on the 20th January, at Reydon, assaulted Robert Clarke, of the same place, gamekeeper. –On the morning in question complainant saw two men on the road each with a gun, and said, “Good night:” they made no reply, but put their guns to their shoulders and pointed them at him. He said, “I know you, Baxter: What! Are you going to shoot?” Neither of them spoke. – A witness named Moore corroborated complainant, and defendant was fined 3l., and 13s. 6d. costs. – Paid. |

According to The Southwold Diary of James Maggs 1818-1867 Volume II, in January 1869 an Inquest at the Walnut Tree, Benacre for Forster Bokenham, 53 of Southwold who was drowned with James Taylor and George Baxter when William Doddington’s fishing boat was sunk just below Southwold on January 24.

| The Ipswich Journal | 02 May 1871 | Lowestoft County Court Friday April 23rd A. Adams v R. Baxter. The plaintiff is a wholesale grocer residing in Lowestoft, and defendant a shop keeper residing at Wangford. The claim was for 3£ 9s 5d. Mrs Baxter asked his Honour what the Plaintiff had brought her to court for, as the transaction was quite out of the district. Plaintiff said part of the goods were supplied at Lowestoft and part of Wangford. It appearing to his Honour that from payments made the amount claimed as a balance would be for goods ordered at Wangford, his Honour said the order of this court was that the case be struck out for want of jurisdiction, and plaintiff would have to go to Halesworth, which he said he should do directly. Mrs Baxter asked his Honour for her expenses which plaintiff hoped, as he had had considerable trouble with Mrs Baxter, his Honour would be favourable in. His Honour reminded Mrs Baxter that when the case was heard in Halesworth she would have to pay plaintiffs expenses of going there. Plaintiff intimated that his time was precious. His Honour made an order for 5s, for expenses, which plaintiff said he was quite content with, as he should get it back again. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 16 Jun 1900 | Police Court Halesworth Thursday Game Keeper Convicted of Egg Stealing.- Richard Baxter, gamekeeper, Brampton, was charged by Stephen J. Andrews, farmer, of Shadingfield, with taking from a next one partridge egg, on May 5th – The prosecutor gave evidence as to seeing accused go past a nest which was in his fence, and in which was one partridge egg. After accused had gone the egg was missing. He went after him, and asked if he had taken the egg, which he denied. – Accused, who is game keeper to the Earl of Stradbroke, denied on oath that he had taken the egg, although he admitted having put his stick in the nest. – The Bench decided to convict, the Chairman remarking that it was a very serious matter for a man in the position of accused, who would be fined 5s., and costs 14s. 7d, or 14 days’ hard labour. |

Margaret is not to be confused with Margaret/Margaretta Dries (1864 – ?) who married Jacob/Jakob Thrien (1858 – ?), in 1882, all were from Germany.
