Baxters of Melton
Melton
Melton adjoins the parish of Woodbridge, on the banks of the river Deben. Two churches stand here both dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. The old church stands some distance from the village, no services are held here, but people are still buried in the cemetery. The new church was built in1868, situated in the main village, but does not have a burial ground. The parish registers date back to 1558. About a mile from the village on the road to Wickham Market stood the House of Industry which became the County Lunatic Asylum in 1829.
What happened to the children of Robert Baxter and Mary Allen of Melton?
William Baxter (1742 – ?)
The following information is based on the assumption that since the William was born in Melton and the William below lived in Melton that he is the son of Robert Baxter and Mary Allen of Melton. However there is a possibility that the following information belongs to a different William Baxter that of William Baxter born in 1738 Leiston the son of Thomas Baxter and Sarah Mayhew. I have assumed that since this second William was born in Leiston it was he who was apprenticed to Benj Bayes of Leiston, Suffolk, peruke maker in 1755. To complicate matters further Joseph Baxter the youngest son of Thomas Baxter of Leiston settles in Alderton at around the same time as the William below was there.
Marriage
William married Esther Thurston (1751 – 1791). From the parish registers of Alderton:
“William Baxter of this parish single man and Esther Thurston of this parish also spinster, were married in this church by banns this twelfth day of September, 1774. In the presence of Wm Upson and James Audley.

| The Ipswich Journal | 15 Feb 1879 | MURDER AT WOODBRIDGE Louisa Barker, married woman, Woodbridge, was charged with wilfully murdering Jessie Nelly Barker, her daughter, at Woodbridge on the 24th January… John Baxter, father of the prisoner said I had a son who died in Melton Lunatic Asylum, where he had been about eighteen months. He was between 40 and 50 years of age. I remember my father, who died at a lunatic asylum. My mother-in-law, Mrs Frost, the grandmother of the prisoner, was also wrong in the head. A daughter of my uncle, named Caroline Baxter, was also wrong in her head. Another relative, named Webb died in Melton Asylum. I was in the house when the witness Sheldrake came to see if I was crying and I was crying at the time because my daughter appeared to take on so. Cross examined. My father was in the asylum two and half years, and he was childish with old age. Mrs Frost was in the same sort of way, but she was not sent anywhere; she was kept under restraint. My son James died in Melton Asylum, but that was not caused by drink. My niece Caroline, I believe, is alive, but I do not known where she is now and I have not seen her for the last six months. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 02 Mar 1878 | Woodbridge Petty Session Report, Wednesday February 27th Stealing a watch – William Baxter, a one – armed man was charged with stealing a silver watch and chain, value £2 10s the property of James Broom, at Hollesley on the 21st February. Prosecutor said he was a superannuated police-constable, living at Hollesley. On the day in question he went out about half-past two o’clock in the afternoon, leaving the watch and chain over the mantel-piece. The door was open. Prisoner was a stranger to him, but witness saw him about 40 yards from his house, going towards it. A few minutes afterwards he was sent for, and on going back saw his wife and prisoner talking together in a neighbour’s yard. His wife said prisoner had taken the watch, which the prisoner denied. Witness the sent for a policeman. His wife said prisoner must have it, as he was seen going into the house. Prisoner said witness might send for the policeman and have him searched. Policeman Burrows came, and took prisoner into his house and searched him, but could not find the watch. Afterwards Burrows went out; and returned in about ten minutes with the watch and chain, and told prisoner he should charge him with stealing them. Prisoner said he was charged wrongfully. The watch produced was the same. Martha Thurkettle, aged 12, said her parents lived next door to prosecutor. On the 21st February she saw prisoner go into Mr. Broom’s house. He knocked at the door before he went in. About five minutes afterwards witness saw him at Mrs Brighten’s house. Prisoner asked witness if she wanted anything, and she said her mother was not at home. Keziah Andrews, aged 14, gave similar evidence as to seeing prisoner knock and go in to Mr. Broom’s. When he came out he went across the road to a ditch and stooped down for a few minutes, and put his hand down, and then went across to Mrs. Brighton’s. He had a basket on his shoulders. Elizabeth Andrews, mother of the last witness, and she found the watch under some grass in the ditch in question. She called Policeman Burrows, who came and picked it up, and showed it to prosecutor. The watch produce was the same. Policeman Burrows produced the watch, and gave evidence in accordance with the last and previous witnesses, and added that when he showed the watch to Brown he identified it at once. Witness charged prisoner with stealing the watch, and took him into custody. He was a licensed hawker, and had a basket. Mrs. Broom, wife of prosecutor, said she was in the garden shortly after two o’clock, and saw prisoner pass down by the hedge. She turned back and found that the watch was gone, and the door open. He said, in answer to witness, that he had been in her house. Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions. |
| The Ipswich Journal | 23 Mar 1878 | Suffolk Quarter Sessions Stealing a watch and chain at Hollesley William Baxter, 36, hawker, was indicted for stealing a silver watch and steel chain, on the values of £2 10s, on the 21st February, the property of James Broom, of Hollesley. Mr. Blofeld prosecuted. On the day named prosecutor left his house, leaving his watch and chain hanging over the mantel piece. His wife was in the garden. He met the prisoner going in the direction of his house. Prisoner went to the house and was seen to go into it. Mrs. Broom went to the house, and missed the watch and chain. Prisoner went out of the house, walked across the road, and was seen to stoop down by the side of a ditch on the opposite side of the road. Policeman Burrows searched the prisoner, but could not find the watch. It was afterwards found by the side of the ditch, where prisoner had been seen to go. Prisoner had nothing to say in defence, and the Jury found the prisoner guilty, and he was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment with hard labour. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 24 Jul 1877 | Petty Session Reports Ipswich Garden Depredators. – Frederick Driver and William Baxter, two lads, were charged with stealing a pint and half of gooseberries from a garden in the occupation of John Garnham, on the Ranelagh Road, on Saturday morning last. Inspector Crawley, of G.E.R. Police Force, said he saw the boys go into the garden. They had been hanging round there for some time, till a man named Fenning, who was in the garden, left. Witness and Fenning went into the garden together and caught the boys with the gooseberries upon them. Fenning was called and corroborated. The Magistrates convicted prisoners and fined them 1s. and 6s. 41/2d. costs, or in default seven days’ imprisonment. They were removed in (sic) custody. |

Defendant thereupon struck her three blows with an umbrella. – A fine of 5s was imposed, and the defendant asked her mother-in-law to pay it, which the latter did not seem inclined to do. |

| The East Anglian Daily Times | 26 Nov 1887 | ADJOURNED INQUEST.- On Friday evening, the adjourned inquest on the body of the unnamed female infant, the child of William and Mary Ann Baxter, which died on Thursday morning, at 14, Payne’s Yard. Tanner’s Lane, was held in the Town Hall, before the Borough Coroner. The Court having been formally opened, Mr. Vogan said that he had made post-mortem examination of the body, and found no external marks. There was an effusion of blood between the scalp and the bone of the skull. On opening the skull he also found effusion on the brain, caused probably by the rupture of a small blood-vessel. The fall which the child had soon after birth would be enough to cause the rupture of the vessel. Death was the result of effusion on the brain, caused by the fall. The Jury returned a verdict accordingly. |
