Baxters of Barnby

Barnby

Barnby is a village along the main road between Beccles and Lowestoft and situated one mile East of North Cove. It is a small agricultural community, one mile from the navigable river Waveney. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, an ancient structure with a thatched roof. The church register’s date back to the Tudor times. The only pub in the village is the Swan.

Early Baxters

Although Baxter families are mentioned in the church registers of Barnby in the 1600, this is in reference to Baxters living in Mutford. This is because the church livings of Barnby and Mutford were once linked. The first reference to the Baxters in Barnby comes in 1746,”Buried January 24 1746 Richard Baxter a married man.” Who Richard Baxter was I’m not sure, he could; possible be brother of Nicholas Baxter of North Cove. The Baxter surname is not mentioned again in the parish records until the nineteenth century.

Frances Baxter (1733 – 1794)

Frances and her husband Samuel Niker (c.1729 – 1810) settled in Barnby in the late 1750s. Their marriage took place in Uggeshall on the 10th October, 1754, in the presence of Eliza London and James Ellis. Frances was not related to the Uggeshall Baxters and her presence there was a coincidence. Frances, was the only child of John Baxter (1708 – 1737) and Sarah Dawkins (d. 1739) baptized 8th July, 1733, Ashby St Mary (near Buckenham), Norfolk. John in turn was the son of John Baxter and Susan Slade, baptized 28th December, 1708, Tasburgh, Norfolk. Frances was an orphan by the age of 6.

Legal action taken in 1740 in the Court of Chancery: Six Clerks Office states the following:
“Baxter V Brown
Plaintiffs: Frances Baxter (only daughter and heir at law of John Baxter carpenter deceased, who was the only son and heir at law of John Baxter, carpenter deceased, both late of Ashby, Norfolk) an infant aged 7 years (by Francis Dawkins, gent of Brampton, Suffolk, her grandfather)
Defendants: Thomas Brown and Magdalene Brown his wife.”

Brampton, Suffolk is just a few miles from Uggeshall. Magdalene Brown was Frances’s paternal aunt, she was baptized the 7th February, 1713/4, the daughter of John Baxter and Susan Slade, Tasburgh, Norfolk. Magdalene married Thomas Brown widower on the 10th September, 1739, Acle, Norfolk.

Frances was possibly first cousins with Robert Baxter (1729 – 1798) who settled in Kessingland.

Eastern Daily Press	17 May 2007 22 Oct 2010	Family Slam ‘Filthy’ Wards  A family has severely criticised a Suffolk hospital for having “filthy” wards in the run up to the death of an 84-year-old grandfather who died after contracting a number of infections. Brian Baxter, who lived in Old Market Street, Thetford, died in November 2004 at the West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, from chronic pneumonia but also contracted the extremely infectious MRSA “superbug”, an inquest heard. Greater Suffolk coroner Dr Peter Dean said there was no way of knowing whether Mr Baxter had contracted MRSA on the ward. Mr Baxter’s son, Jonathon, expressed concern that his father had been treated by staff without gloves, there had been insufficient hand-cleaning facilities and his family had not been informed of the MRSA infection itself. Consultant Abul Azim, who treated the man, said the family had been informed of the infection twice and produced doctor’s notes of their meetings. Dr Elizabeth Wright, a consultant microbiologist who also gave evidence at the inquest, said the pensioner had not been tested for the infection on admission for a mini stroke in September 2004, but cited that 10pc of infected patients infected came in with the superbug. She said numerous tests were completed to find out what was causing Mr Baxter’s high fever before MRSA was discovered. Dr Wright said the ward also used foam washes, which had proved effective against infection and that general cleanliness was good in 2004. In a narrative verdict, Dr Dean ruled out the possibility that the MRSA infection had been fatal. He said: “Mr Baxter died from acute pneumonia against a background of infection, including MRSA.” But speaking afterwards Jonathon Baxter said: “We were not happy with the West Suffolk. That hospital was filthy. It was a disgrace. However, the staff at my father’s death were excellent and by now it has probably changed. This is the end of the matter for us.” Nichole Day, director of nursing and service improvement at the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust, said: “In 2005 there was an enormous push to promote hand-washing as a key infection control measure. We signed up to the national clean your hands campaign and ensured alcohol hand-rubs were available at every bedside and at the entrance to every ward. We have seen MRSA rates fall year-on-year and this has been recognised in the two recent external reports on hospital cleanliness which placed West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust in the ‘good’ category.”
