Baxters of Uggeshall

Uggeshall

Uggeshall is four miles north of Southwold. Its economy was largely driven by agriculture. The church is dedicated to St Mary and the building has a thatched roof and flint exterior.

William Baxter (1612 – 1668)

It is not clearly where William came from and only his first child was baptized in Uggeshall, tradition dictates that the first child is born at the mothers home which might suggest William came from another village in the surrounding area.

William married Margaret Gailford*, from the parish registers of Uggeshall:
“Will Baxter and Margaret Gayford* were married the eight day of October 1638.”
*There are two sources for Margaret’s surname the first been Boyd’s marriage index the second being the parish register.

Benjamin first appears in the Blythburgh parish registers in 1734 and does not reappear until 1741 when his son Benjamin was buried in Uggeshall.

Employment

In 1748 the parish records reveal that Benjamin Baxter was the Church Warden for Uggeshall. Church Wardens were lay officers of the Church of England. There were usually two Church Wardens in the parish, one chosen by the incumbent, the other by the parishioners. Church Wardens were allowed to levy a rate on all parishioners and their duties included the preservation and maintenance of the church, giving poor relief, paying the bell ringers and the shooting of vermin and birds. Some Church Warden’s accounts exist from this period.

Benjamin Baxter (1747 – ?)

Benjamin starts his married life in Uggeshall, but the last that was heard of Benjamin Baxter in Uggeshall was the burial of his twin daughters Martha and Mary in 1785. After that nothing of him or his family until his sons Benjamin (1776) and William (1777) reappear in Henstead in the late 1790s. Sarah (Hall) possible appears in Barnby named as being among the parish poor in around 1812. That Sarah a widow was buried on 3rd December, 1829 Barnby at the age of 82. Son James (1783) appears in the 1841 census living with his nephew William Baxter (son of Benjamin (1776)) in Barnby.

All information on James comes from the census records. James appears to have spent his later life in the workhouse and information provided to the census enumerator would have come from the work house owners rather than the inmates, which may explain why James’s place of birth is different each time. I would suggest these are the places he last worked.

Joseph spent his early married life in Benacre, before spending a short time in Henstead. By the 1800 Joseph was living in Covehithe where he died.

Joseph marries three times his first wife was Susanna Cable (1753 – 1795). From the parish records of Benacre:
“Joseph Baxter of this parish single man and Susanna Cable single woman of this parish were married in this church by banns this fourth day of January, 1785. In the presence of John Ward and William Youngs.”

Joseph’s second wife was Elizabeth Howlett (1765 – 1799). Elizabeth’s baptism was recorded on the 16th January, 1765, Blythburgh, no other informtion was recorded. From the parish records of Benacre:

Elizabeth married twice her first husband was Richard Henry. From the parish registers of Raveningham, Norfolk:

Elizabeth second marriage was to John Sayer, who she married 10th April, 1821, Shadingfield.

William Baxter (1777 – 1840)

William Baxter comes from Mundham, Norfolk. He was the son of John Baxter (1747 – 1825) and Hannah Gibbs (1750 – 1823). John’s will states that he lived and died in Kelsale Suffolk, but he is described as “John Baxter of Mundham, Norfolk.” William was living in Suffolk from the 1810s, firstly in Kelsale before settling in Uggeshall.

William married Ann(e) Woodrow (1778 – 1854) the daughter of Thomas Woodrow and Rachel Row(e) and the niece of James Row. From the parish registers of Mundham:

William appears in the tithe apportionments for Uggeshall 1841, but since he was dead by this time this should refer to his wife Ann. It shows Ann and her family were the occupiers of greater that 20 acres of land which consists of mainly significant farms.

Sundry Freehold Cottage With Land Attached Situated in the centre of the village of Wangford In one lot. The property comprises Eleven recently and substantially built Freehold brick and tile cottages, with gardens attached, containing, in all 1 Rood 12 Perches of land, the same being in the several occupation of Richard Aldrid, William Barfoot, Peter Pryatt, William Jasper, James Osborne, Wm Aldrid, James Hayes, Charles Newby, William Calver, James Ellis and John Flex, with a well of excellent spring water upon the premises. These cottages are in an excellent state of repair; part of them have been built within the last 10 years, and they are now produce a rental of £52 4s per ann. Will Information

William left a will which was proved in 1840.
In 1847 Ann is a recipient in her Uncle, James Row’s will. Ann herself writes a will on the 5th March, 1850 she was described as a widow from Brampton. Ann dies on the 15th June, 1854. Two recipients in Ann’s will are her son John Row Baxter and her daughter Elizabeth Baxter.

All persons indebted to the said John Row Baxter, or that have any of his effects, are not to pay or deliver the same, but to Mr Edmund Reeve Palmer, the clerk of the said Court, at his office, at Regent-Street, Great Yarmouth, the Official Assignee of the Estate and Effects of the said Insolvent.

Whereas at a public sitting of the Court, held this day, it was adjudged that the said bankrupt was entitled to his Discharge under the provision of the Bankruptcy Act, 1861 (after the suspension thereof for four calendar months, form the 31st day of August, 1864) the reason of such suspension being that it appears to the court that the Bankrupt’s insolvency is attributable to unjustifiable extravagance in living, and that he could not have had, at the time when some of the debts were contracted, any reasonable or probable ground of expectation of being able to pay the same. Protection granted. The Ipswich Journal	21 Nov 1868	Yoxford Petty Session Wednesday November 18th Neglecting to maintain a wife – John Baxter of Newmarket, Hay dealer was brought up in custody charged with having on the 7th day of November, at Halesworth, he being a person able to maintain himself and his family by work, wilfully neglected to maintain Mary Ann, his wife, whereby she became chargeable to the common fund of the Blything Union. Charged dismissed. A Summons was afterwards obtained against Baxter under the 31st and 32nd vic to show cause why an order should not be made upon him for the maintenance of his wife who was chargeable to the common fund. Baxter consented to have the case then disposed of, and was ordered to pay the sum of 2s 10d per week towards her maintenance with costs.
Bury and Norwich Post	07 Sep 1869	Died On the 3rd inst., at Newmarket All Saints, after a few hours illness, of apoplexy, aged 55, Mr John R. Baxter, hay and straw merchant, of that place.

Samuel Baxter (1802 – 1866)

Samuel maybe the father of Mary Ann Baxter baptised on the 2nd March, 1823, Sotherton. Mary Ann was the base born daughter of Samuel Baxter and Mary Stygell. He spent his early married life working in Uggeshall. Around the time of the 1851 census Samuel appears to be working in Stafford. It is unclear if his move their was permanent.

The Ipswich Journal	07 Oct 1865	Halesworth Petty Session Poaching Prevention – Edw Baxter of Uggeshall, labourer, was charged with having on the 25th September, been suspected of coming from certain land whereon he had been in search of game, and having in his possession, on a certain highway there a certain net used for taking game, which was then seized by Louis Elliott, policeman. Defendant was fined 2£ and 16s 6d costs, which he paid.
The Ipswich Journal	21 Nov 1871	Halesworth Petty Session Monday November 20th H. Paddall Wangford v E Baxter and S Plumb – Action to recover the value of a pig. Plaintiff said that on the 19th of October he went out with his wife and family and left him man W Baxter (Linstead) to mind the premises. While he was away the two defendants came to his house and took a fat pig out of the sty, he went to Baxter’s the next morning about it, but found it was killed and the two defendants had taken it to Lowestoft. He left word with Baxter’s mother that if he did not come and make arrangement he should enter an action against him. Wm Baxter* plaintiff’s man said the defendants came and took the pig while his master was out, but although left in charge he did not consider it any concern of his. The defendant Plumb, said he was authorised by plaintiff to sell the pig, and sold it to Baxter for £4 10s. The money was left with a woman in charge. Plaintiff denied authorising defendant to sell the pig for him and said the money was never given him by the woman of the house. The defendant Baxter said he went with Plumb and bought the pig of him for £4 10s. His Honour said they had no right to take the pig away in Plaintiffs absence and gave judgement for £5 to be paid in 14 days.
The Ipswich Journal	13 Jan 1877	Halesworth Petty Session Wednesday 10th January Game Offence – Edward Baxter of Uggeshall, dealer, was charged with having on the 29th December, at Henstead, trespassed on land in the occupation of Elizabeth Smith in search of game. On the morning of the day name Baxter was seen to take a hare from a dog on the land in question. He was fined £1 and 9 s 6d, costs, which he paid.
The Ipswich Journal	08 Jul 1882	Petty Sessions: Halesworth Thursday 6th July Drunkenness – Edward Baxter, of Uggeshall, dealer was charged with being drunk on the 24th June, at Wrentham, on highway there while in charge of a horse and carriage. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s, and 9s costs, which he paid.
Framlingham Weekly News	23 Jun 1894	Petty Sessions: Halesworth on Thursday Edward Baxter, of Uggeshall, dealer, was charged with neglecting to slaughter one fat pig within four days of sale, in contravention of the Swine Fever Order, 1894, and was fined 20s. and costs 7s. 2d., which was paid.
