Baxters of Westhall

Westhall
Westhall is a small village which lays eight and a half miles from Halesworth and two and half miles from Brampton. The church was built in Norman times and is dedicated to St Andrew. The Parish registers date back to Tudor times. Westhall was the home to the Bohun family from the time of Henry VIII. Dorothy Baxter daughter of Stephen Baxter, gentleman of Mendham Suffolk married Edmund Bohun of Westhall 10th January, 1614.

David Baxter (1847 – 1929)
David Baxter was born in 1847 Harleston, Norfolk the son of Susanna Baxter and James Notley. Susanna is in turn the daughter of David Baxter (Yaxham, 1786 – 1862) and Mary Oldhouse/Aldhouse (Hardwick, 1784-1864/6). David Baxter married Mary Oldhouse on the 24th October 1809, Hardwick, Norwich. Susanna Baxter went on to marry Robert Cullingford in 1854. David settled in Westhall in the 1860s. His younger brother Arthur Robert Baxter (1852 – 1920) settled in Ipswich.
Marriage
David married twice his first wife was Phoebe Barker (1843 – 1885) the daughter of John Barker and Charlotte Pedgrave.
