Baxters of Wingfield
Wingfield
Wingfield is 7 miles east of Diss and about a mile or so from Fressingfield. The church is dedicated to St Andrew with parish registers dating back to 1538.

Mary married William Durrant (1781 – 1848), the son of William Durrant and Pleasance/Pleasant Parker. From the parish registers of Thornham Magna:
“William Durrant single man of this parish and Mary Baxter single woman of Stoke Ash were married in this church by banns this 22nd day of May 1809. In the presence of James Baxter and Phoebe Brock.”
John Baxter (1784 – 1810)
The majority of John’s siblings moved away from Wingfield and headed in the direction of Eye Suffolk or over the boarder into Norfolk. There is no sign that John married in Suffolk and was not the John of Bury St Edmunds (1792 – 1841) this was the son of John Baxter and Frances Allen. Nor was John buried in Suffolk unless he died in the workhouse. Searching further afield there was a candidate in Norwich which could be Wingfield John, however there are a number of Johns baptized in Norwich at this time. The following information maybe Wingfield John’s it might not.
Marriage
John Baxter married Rosamond/Rose Atkins (c. 1787 – 1854). From the parish registers of Norwich St Stephens:
“John Baxter bachelor of St Stephens and Rose Atkins spinster married by banns on this 18th day of May 1807. In the presence of John English and John Cobb.”
After John’s death Rosamond/Rose married William Duckett in 1816.

James Baxter (1789 – ?)
James was transported to Australia on the Lord Meville, departing England on the 14th November, 1828 and arrived in Sydney Cove, New South Wales on 6th May, 1829. In 1836 James obtained a ticket of leave which enabled convicts to work for themselves on condition that they remained in a specific area and reported regularly to local authorities. James was restricted to the Inverary district. Inverary is a homestead (a farmhouse together with the land around it) with a number of mines in the area (iron ore, lead and silver). The nearest village is Marulan and the nearest city is Goulburn. In such a remote area of Australia I lose James after 1836.

| The Ipswich Journal | 13 Oct 1827 | The office of Sir Edward’ Kerrison’s Secretary, at Oakley Park, was broken open on Saturday night the 6th of October, or early Sunday morning, and money stolen to the amount of about 50£. Mr. Sparkes, of Yaxley, discovered the thieves, Baxter and Dallenger, two labourers in Sir Edward’s employ, at Botesdale with the bags and money as taken from the desk, on Sunday 7th, and has committed the offenders to Ipswich gaol. They are both inhabitants of Hoxne village. |
| The Ipswich Journal | 26 Jan 1828 | Ipswich Quarter Sessions James Baxter and John Dallenger were indicted for having stolen, on the night of October 6, from an office belonging to Hoxne Hall, two silk bags, 45 pounds in bank notes, a cash-box, a sovereign, a half-sovereign, and about 7 pounds in silver, the property of Sir Edward Kerrison, Bart. – It appeared in evidence, that Baxter was in the employ of Sir Edward Kerrison, and had received one pound in wages on the evening of the robbery; Dallenger had been also at work at the Park till the preceding Thursday; they both resided at Hoxne. – Mr. James Ormonstone, Sir Edward’s steward, after paying the workmen on the Saturday evening, deposited the notes, money, purses, and box, in a bureau in the office; he locked up the bureau and the office door; on the Sunday morning, about eight o’clock, on going to the office, he found the door had been broken open, and the bureau, and the articles specified in the indictment gone, together with some memorandums; other papers were scattered about the floor. Suspicion falling on the prisoners, Sparks and Wells, two active officers, were sent for, and soon ascertained they were gone to Rickinghall; the offices found them drinking and smoking with some other persons, at the Greyhound at Botesdale, very near Rickinghall. On searching them they found on Baxter 30£. 19s. 6d.; and on Dallenger 1£. 17s. 3d. ; Dallenger was seen to throw from him one of the silk purses, with four 1£. Notes init, which the officers took up; they also found a piece of paper on the floor, which Mr. Ormonstone identified as containing one of his memorandums; they found a five and a ten pound note under the grate. The prisoners were then taken to Yaxley, Lion; and there Baxter picked the other purse from under his chair, and gave it to Wells. In Baxter’s house, Stephen Barkway, constable, found a small obissel (sic), which, when applied to the bureau, fitted the impressions made by the instrument with which it had been forced open. – The prisoners being found guilty, were sentenced to 14 years transportation. |

Christopher states that he was a widow in 1891 and by 1901 was living with a Louisa. By 1911 he declares himself a widow again. There’s no sign of Christopher marrying a Louisa or a Louisa predeceasing Christopher, which might indicate that Christopher was not free to marry. There’s no death registered for Sarah Baxter in the West Ham district in the 1881 to 1901 period that fits her age. There’s a death registered in West Ham in 1905 for a Sarah Baxter aged 67 (c. 1838). Sarah might be in an institution, Sarah might have walked away from the marriage, or Sarah’s death occurred somewhere away from the West Ham district.
