Baxters of Blythburgh

Blythburgh
Blythburgh is situated on the river Blyth five miles west of Southwold and five miles east from Halesworth. The church at Blythburgh is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and is often described as the ‘Cathedral of the marshes’. The parish registers date back to Tudor times. Blythburgh is a mile from the village of Bulcamp, the site of the workhouse for the Blything area.

Nineteenth Century Baxters
The Baxters that arrive in Blythburgh in the nineteenth century came from other Baxter families well established in the area.

Robert Baxter (1819 – 1896)
Marriage
Robert married Maria Sherman (1831 – 1889). Maria’s origins are some what complex, I am certain she was the daughter of Margaret Ellingham (1792 – 1864), who her father was, is not so clear. Margaret married at least 3 times, her first marriage was to John Rowland/Rowlings (d 1825) who she married in 1811. Her second husband was William Sherman (d. 1829) who she married in 1825. Her third husband was Edward Riches (d. 1879) who she married in 1836. Having searched the parish registers of Rockland St Mary, there is no baptism for a Maria Sherman, however there is the following entry in the register:
Born 7th May baptized 19th June, 1831 Maria daughter of William Bernard and Margaret late Ellingham, Rockland labourer.
I believe Margaret may have lied to the curate and perhaps hoped to marry William Bernard. By 1851 Margaret and her third husband Edward Riches were living in Halesworth along with their granddaughter Eleanor\Ellen Sherman. Eleanor Sherman was born 23/25 June 1849 and baptized 28th June 1866, parish church of Halesworth the daughter of Maria Sherman.

| Beccles and Bungay news | 17 Mar 1861 | Halesworth Fire – The inhabitance of Blythburgh were greatly alarmed on Thursday, the 7th, by a fire which broke out about eleven o’clock in the forenoon, at the cottage of Robert Baxter, labourer. It originated by a chimney becoming over heated and several pieces of burning soot escaping therefrom, and falling upon the premises of Robert Attoe, dealer, thereby setting fire to a halum stack and shed, doing damage to the amount of about 20 pounds. A great number of persons were quickly on the spot, and used the utmost vigilance in procuring a plentiful supply of water, by means of which the flames were soon extinguished. We hear that the farm house and buildings occupied by Mr Osborn, together with a hay stack, belonging to Mr Freeman, had a narrow escape. |
| The Ipswich Journal | 01 Jun 1861, 08 Jun 1861 & 15 Jun 1861 | Auction Saturday June 15th 1861 Blythburgh …Lot 3 Three freehold cottages with good gardens, adjoining the Turnpike Road, in the centre of the village now occupied by Robert Attoe, Robert Baxter and Robert Pinkney, at rents amounting to £13 per annum. |
| The Ipswich Journal | 18 Feb 1871 | Halesworth Petty Session Using snares on a Sunday – Arthur Hatcher of Blythburgh labourer was charged with having, on Saturday 12th February, at Blythburgh, used snares for the purpose of taking game. Robert Baxter of the same place, labourer, was charged with a similar offence on the same day. Hatcher was an old offender was fined £4 8s and 12s costs; and Baxter, who appeared to have never been convicted was fined £1 8s and 12s costs, which he paid; and Hatcher in default of payment was committed to Ipswich gaol for the space of two calendar months, with hard labour. |
| The Ipswich Journal | 24 Aug 1880 | County Court Reports – Halesworth Monday August 23rd Elmy v Baxter – James Elmy, labourer, Blythburgh, sought to recover from Robert Baxter, labourer, of the same place, for six wooden chairs, value £1 6s. Plaintiff on being sworn, stated that he had been lodging with defendant and for their mutual convenience had lent him the chairs in question. Defendant now refused to give up the chairs, and the action was bought in consequence. Defendant pleaded that the chairs had been given him by the plaintiff. His Honour considered it extremely improbable that plaintiff would give away his property without any consideration, and ordered defendant to return the chairs at once or pay the amount claimed with costs, in a fortnight. |

| Lowestoft Journal | 09 Jul 1904 | Lowestoft Police Court BAXTER’S DOG Thomas Baxter, boat agent, who lives on Oulton Broad in a kind of house-boat, was summoned for keeping a dog without a license. P. C. Jackson said the defendant had two dogs. He got rid of one, and kept the other. Defendant now said he did not think he required a license as he lived on the water. The constable added that the dog was often in the road, playing with other dogs, and was a great nuisance, especially as there were many cyclists about. Defendant declared he had given the dog away. The policeman replied the dog came back. Defendant – I can’t nicely turn it away. The Chairman – Ah! These stories will not do. Subsequently the defendant said he had given the dog away to a man named Beans, of Barnby, whom he believed, had taken out a license. In answer to Mr Charlesworth, the officer said they did not know this for a fact – only by what the man said. Fined 5s, including costs. |
| Lowestoft Journal | 19 Nov 1904 | Rollesby – Tuesday Bessie Baxter of Oulton applied for a separation from her husband, on the grounds of consistent cruelty. The wife’s evidence showed that the couple who have been married for a number of years. The first week the applicant was married her husband threw bricks and stones at her. They had lived on a houseboat on Oulton Broad for a number of years, but she now refused to live there, as the craft leaked. That was the main grievance. If her husband provided a proper home she would live with him. It was now ten weeks since applicant left her husband, during which time he had assaulted her. She was now living with her mother at Flegg Burgh. Defendant stated that he had never ill-treated his wife. Applicant had run away from him on some occasions. The case was dismissed. |
