There are no baptism records for a George born in Ipswich in the 1770s, therefore its likely George moved to the town for work. George was possibly the son of William Baxter and Beatrix Todd baptized the 5th November, 1779, Bury St Edmunds.

George married Martha Rands (1779 – 1861) the daughter of Emanuel Rands and Willeman (Willemina) Mary Brook (the widow of Daniel Taylor) on the 16th July, 1805, Ipswich St Margaret.

Freehold Cottages &C at Ipswich To be sold at Auction By Berry & Randall On Thursday, June 20, 1867 at the Coach and Horse Inn, Brook Street, Ipswich, at Six for Seven o’clock in the evening. The following properties of the late Mrs Baxter and Mr Emanuel Baxter deceased:- Lot 1 – Two substantial brick built dwelling Houses, recessed from the road and enclosed with neat iron palisading, situate and being Nos 43 and 45 in the Rope Walk, St Clement’s Ipswich. In the occupation of Orsborn and Tydemans and rents amounting to £18 4s per annum. Lot 2 – Two brick build cottages at the, rear of Lot 1, with small garden in front, in the occupation of Buck and Baxter, at rents amounting to £11 5s 4d. Lot 3 – A substantial Brick-built dwelling House, with a large garden in the rear, situated and being No 35 in the Rope Walk, St Clement’s Ipswich, occupied by Mr Lock, at the rent of £9 2s per annum. Baxter Martha – 3 January. The will of Martha Baxter late of Ipswich in the County of Suffolk widow deceased who died 23 July 1861 at Ipswich aforesaid was proved at Ipswich by the oath of George Baxter of Ipswich aforesaid Serjeant at-Mace the son and the surviving Executor.
This is the last Will and Testament of me Martha Baxter of Ipswich in the County of Suffolk widow made this sixth day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifty six. First I will and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses shall be fully paid and satisfied by my Executors hereafter named as soon as conveniently can be after my decease. I give and devise all that my messuage and tenement hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances thereunto belonging situated in the Rope Lane in the parish of Saint Clement Ipswich aforesaid heretofore in the tenure and occupation of {blank} Chilman and now and late in the tenure and occupation of Henry Jacobs together with the cottage at the back thereof with the hereditaments and appurtenances to the same cottage belonging heretofore in the occupation of the Widow Frances afterwards of the Widow Vincent and now and late of {blank} Garwood together with the ground and soil of the passage way on the West side of the same messuage and tenement cottage and hereditaments and the pipe and taps of water standing and being in the same passage way and also the privy at the North End of the same passage way and also the ground and soil of the passage way at the South side of as well the said cottage and hereditaments as of a certain cottage and hereditaments adjoining thereto now and late in the occupation of {blank} Everitt subject nevertheless to a right for the Owners and Occupiers for the time being of the said last mentioned cottage and hereditaments and of a certain other cottage and hereditaments adjoining thereto late in the occupation of {blank} Vincent but now and for some time past unoccupied and also of certain tenements and hereditaments now in the respective occupations of my sons Emmanuel Baxter and Charles Baxter to use and enjoy the said passage ways and to take draw and carry away water from the said pipe and tap of water and now used and enjoyed and also subject to a right for the tenants and occupiers of the said cottage and hereditaments now and late occupied by the said {blank} Everett to use and enjoyed the said privy as now used and enjoyed unto my son George Baxter aforesaid Sergeant at Mace and Thomas Baldock Ross of Ipswich aforesaid Auctioneer and their heirs to hold the same messuage and tenement cottage hereditaments and premises subject as aforesaid unto and to the use and to the use of them the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross their heirs and assigns Upon and for the trust intents and purposes hereinafter expressed and contained of and incurring the same that is to say Upon trust for my Granddaughters Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria Baxter (the three Daughters of my son William Baxter deceased) and the heirs and assigns of the said Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria Baxter respectively as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and in case any one or more of them my said Granddaughters the said Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria Baxter shall die under the age of twenty one years and without leaving issue of her or them respectively living at her or their respective death or deaths then Upon trust (as to and concerning as well the original share or respective shares of each one or more of them the said Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria Baxter as shall so die of and in the said messuage in tenement cottage hereditaments and premises as also as to and concurring the share or shares thereof which may accrue to her or them respectively under this cross device or limitation) for the other or others of them the said Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria and her and their respective heirs and assigns and if more than one as tenants in common and not as joint tenants And I declare that I have excluded my Grandson Henry Baxter the son of my said son William Baxter deceased from participating with his said Sisters in the devise to and in trust for them aforesaid messauge and tenement cottage hereditaments and premises hereinbefore contained not from any want of affection for him but because he is otherwise provided for Also I give and devise all those my tenements and cottages with the appurtenances situated at the back of certain messuages and tenements and hereditaments situated in the Rope Lane aforesaid lately given granted and conveyed by me unto and to use in favour of my son Joseph Baxter with the Washhouses privy and appurtenances thereunto belonging and now used therewith as the same were heretofore in the respective occupations of {blank} Lockwood {blank} Mills and {blank} Keeble and are now and late were in the several tenures and occupations of Joseph Archer {blank} Berry and the Widow Baxter together with the pieces of garden ground now of late occupied by the said Joseph Archer and {blank} Berry respectively and the piece of vacant ground lying at the South and of the said messuage a tenement and hereditaments now and late in the occupation of the said Joseph Archer together with the soil of the common yard and passage ways leading from the said street and lane called the Rope Lane to the same messuage and tenements and hereditaments and other hereditaments adjoining thereto lately given granted and conveyed by me unto and to use in favour of my sons Joseph Baxter and the said George Baxter respectively and subject to the easements and rights to in the same grants and conveyances respectively contained unto the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and their heirs to hold the same unto and to the use of the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross their heirs and assigns Upon and for the trusts intents and preposes and subject to the powers and provisos and declarations hereinafter expressed and contrived of and concerning the same that is to say Upon trust that they the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and the survivor of them and the heirs of such survivor and other the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will do and shall during the life of my said Granddaughter Sarah Ann Farthing the wife of Robert Farthing now and late a Private in the Forth Queens Own Regiment of Foot pay and apply so much of the rents and profits of the same tenements and cottages pieces of ground hereditaments and premises as shall be necessary in keeping all the same tenements and cottages and buildings in good and sufficient repair and insured against loss or damage by fire in some good Insurance Office in such a sum of money as they or he shall think proper and subject thereto do and shall pay all the residue and remainder of the same rents and profits of the said last mentioned tenements and cottages piece of ground hereditaments and premises unto my Granddaughter the said Sarah Ann Farthing for her sole and separate use and benefit and so that such residue and remainders of the same unto and profits shall and may not be subject and liable to the debts contracts control forfeiture and engagements of the said Robert Farthing or of any future husband of her the said Sarah Ann Farthing and so that the said Sarah Ann Farthing shall and may not at any time sell Mortgage assign change or in anyway anticipate all or any part of such residue and remainders of the sane unto and profits before the same shall become due and payable and so that the receipt of the said Sarah Ann Farthing signed with her own hand for such residue and remainder of the same rents and profits shall be an effectual discharge to the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and the survivor of them and the heirs of such survivor or other the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will for the same And from and after the decease of the said Sarah Ann Farthing upon trust for all and every the children and child of my said Granddaughter the said Sarah Ann Farthing if more than one share and share alike as tenants in common and for his her and their respective heirs and assigns but in the event of the death of the said Sarah Ann Farthing in my lifetime without leaving children or a child her surviving then Upon trust for my Grandson James Baxter the Brother of the said Sarah Ann Farthing his heirs and assigns for ever but in case the said James Baxter shall die under the age of twenty one years and without leaving issue of him living at his death then Upon trust for my children the said George Baxter Joseph Baxter Emanuel Baxter and Charles Baxter and the heirs and assigns of the said George Baxter Joseph Baxter Emanuel Baxter and Charles Baxter respectively as tenants in common and not as joint tenants Provided always and I do hereby declare that it shall be lawful for the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and for the survivor of them and for the heirs of such survivor or other the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will if they or he shall in their or his discretion think it desirable so to do at any time or times during the life of the said Sarah Ann Farthing and also at any time or times after her decease during the minority of any child of the said Sarah Ann Farthing to dispose of by way of absolute sale the said tenements and cottage pieces of Ground hereditaments and premises lastly hereinbefore devised or any parts or parts thereof by public auction or private contract for the best price and most money that can reasonably be obtained for the same and I declare that for the purpose of effectuating any such sale it shall be lawful for the said trustees or trustee for the time being by any deed or deeds sealed and delivered by them or him in the presence of and attested by one or more witness or witnesses absolutely to revoke determine and make void all and every or any of the uses trusts powers provisos and declarations in this my Will expressed and contained of and concerning the hereditaments and premises so proposed to be sold and by the same any other deed or deeds sealed and delivered and attested in like manner to declared and appoint any uses estates or trusts of the hereditaments and premises the uses of which shall be so revoked which it shall be thought necessary or expedient to declare or appoint in order to effectuate any such sale as aforesaid and I declare that upon payment of the money to arise by such sale or sales as aforesaid it shall be lawful for the said trustees or trustee to sign and give receipts for the same and that such receipts shall effectually discharge the person or persons preparing the same from being answerable for the misapplication or non application or from being bound to see to the application of the money therein mentioned to be received and that the said trustees or trustee shall stands possessed of the money to arise by such sale or sales as aforesaid upon the same trusts intents and purposes and with under and subject to the same proviso provisos and declarations in this my Will expressed and contained of and concerning the hereditaments and premises which shall have been so sold or as near thereto as circumstances will then admit of I give and bequeath all my household goods and furniture plate linen and all other my personal estate and effects whatever and wherever situate unto the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross their executors and administrations Upon trust that the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross or the survivor of them of the executors or administrators of such survivor do and shall as soon as conveniently can be after my decease sell dispose of and convert into money all such part and parts of said personal estates as shall not consist of money or securities for money and do and shall call in receive and get in all such part and parts of my said personal estate as shall consist of money or securities for money and it is my Will and I declare that the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and the survivor of them and the Executors and administrators of such survivor shall stand possessed of the monies to arise from such sale disposition conversion calling in receiving and getting in of my said personal estate Upon and for the trust intents and purposes and subject to the powers provisos and declarations hereinafter expressed and declared of and concerning the same that is to say as to and concerning four equal sixth parts or shares of the said trust monies and premises upon trust for my said Children the said George Baxter Joseph Baxter Emanuel Baxter and Charles Baxter equally to be divided between them share and share alike and as to and concerning one other equal sixth part a share of the said trust monies and premises upon trust for my said Granddaughters the said Emma Baxter Martha Baxter and Maria Baxter equally to be divided between them share and share a like and as to and concerning the remaining equal sixth part or share of the said trust monies and premises upon trust for my said Granddaughter the said Sarah Ann Farthing for her absolute use and benefit Provided always and I do hereby expressly authorise and empower the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and the survivor of them and the executors and administrators of such survivor or other the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will in their or his discretion to pay and apply all or any part of the share for the time being of any or either of my said Grandchildren who at the time of my decease may be under the age of twenty one years of and in the said trust monies premises and the interest of such share during his her or their minority in and towards the maintenance clothing and education or otherwise for the benefit of such Minor Grandchild or Grandchildren And I give and devise unto and to the use of the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross and their heirs all estates vested in me as a trustee in fee or mortgage in fee but subject to the several trusts and equities which do or shall affect the same estates and I Nominate Constitute And Appoint the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross Executors of this my Will Provided always and I do hereby declare that in case the said George Baxter and Thomas Baldock Ross or either of them or any succeeding or other trustees or trustee of the said trust estates and premises shall die in my lifetime or other after my decease or shall refuse to accept or desire to resign or become incapable to act in all or any of the trust aforesaid it shall be lawful for the surviving or continuing trustees or trustee of the premises the trustee or trustees of which shall so die refuse to accept desire to resign or become incapable to act as aforesaid or if there shall be no such surviving or contriving trustee then for the Executor or Administrator Executors or Administrators of the last surviving trustee from time to time and when and so often the occasion shall require by and deed or writing under their his her hands and seals or hand and seal to nominate and appoint some other fit and proper person or persons to be a trustee or trustees in the place of such trustees or trustee for the time being who shall die or refuse to accept or desire to resign or become incapable to act as aforesaid and immediately upon such nomination and appointment all the said trust estates and premises shall be forthwith conveyed assigned transferred and assured so and in such manner as that the same my be lawfully and effectually vested in such new trustee or trustees either jointly with the surviving or continuing trustee or trustees or solely as the case may require to the uses upon the trusts and for the ends intents and purposes hereinbefore declared and the trustee or trustees so to be nominated and appointed shall and may either before or after such conveyance assignment transfer and assurance act in perform and exercise all and singular the trusts and powers herein contained the same in all respects as if they or he respectively had been originally nominated and appointed trustees or trustee in and by this my Will Provided also and I do hereby declare that my said Executors and Trustees hereby appointed and the trustees or trustee to be appointed by virtue of the provisions lastly hereinbefore contained and each and every of them respectively shall be changed and changeable only for such money as they or he respectively shall actually receive by virtue of the trusts hereby in him and them reposed notwithstanding his or them or either of them giving or signing any receipt for the sake of conformity and that neither of them shall be answerable for the acts of the others or other of them nor for any involuntary loss whatsoever and that it shall be lawful to and for them or him respectively by and out of the monies which shall come to their or his respective hands by virtue of the trust aforesaid to deduct retain and reimburse themselves and himself respectively and allow to each other all costs charges and expenses whatsoever which they or he respectively shall or may suffer sustain expend disburse be at or be part unto in or about the execution of the aforesaid trusts or in relation thereto And lastly I hereby revoke all former will codicils and other testamentary disposition by me made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I the said Martha Baxter the testatrix have to each of the seven sheets of paper containing this my Will subscribed my name the day and year first above written

On the third day of January 1862 the Will of Martha Baxter late of Ipswich in the County of Suffolk Widow deceased who died on the twenty third day of July 1861 at Ipswich aforesaid was proved in the District Registry attached to Her Majesty’s Court of Probate at Ipswich by the oath of George Baxter of Ipswich aforesaid Sergeant at Mace the son of the deceased the surviving Executor therein named he having been first sworn duly to administrate. | The Ipswich Journal | 26 Dec 1846 | On Monday, Joseph Baxter landlord of the Cow and Pail public house, Rope-Lane was charged with having on Sunday morning, the 13th inst., kept open house during divine service. The charge was proved by police Buckingham and Carver, who at half-past 11 o’clock found several persons drinking in the house. The defendant denied the charges first, on the grounds that some of the parties were lodgers and secondly on the grounds that they belonged to a Benefit Society newly formed, consisting of twelve members. The police replied that the defendant had been cautioned two or three times before against repeating the offence. The defendant was fined 30s and costs. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 11 Nov 1865 | Ipswich Petty Session Monday November 6th Keeping a beer house open on a Sunday – Charles Baxter landlord of the Bold Crispin was charged with keeping his house open on Sunday 5th inst. Policeman Jacobs said he went to the defendants house in the Rope Walk at twenty minutes to one o’clock on Sunday morning and found four persons there. There were mugs on the table, but no beer in them. He did not see the men drink beer. Defendant said his house was open, but he denied that it was open for the sale of beer. He had kept the house six years, but had never had any complaints against him before. Supt. Mason said this was the first complaint against the house, and the Magistrate allowed the case to be withdrawn. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 27 Jan 1900 | EX-IPSWICH AUCTIONEER’S FAILURE A first meeting of the creditors of Mr. Alfred Thomas Baxter, auctioneer and estate agent, lately carrying on business at 33, Upper Brook Street, Ipswich, and now trading as Baxter and Son, at 4, The Pavement, Seven Kings, Ilford, was held at the officer of the Official Receiver, Temple Chambers, London, on Tuesday. The summary of the debtor’s statement of affairs showed liabilities to 18 unsecured creditors, £316 19s. 6d. The assets are – Cash at bankers, 6s. 3d.,; stock-in-trade, £60 (cost £100); furniture, £70; book debt (good), £10; total, £140 6s. 3d.; deduct creditors for distrainable rent and preferential rates per contra £28 8s. 7d.; total, £111 17s. 8d. leaving a deficiency of £205 1s. 10d. – The observations of the Official Receiver (Mr. Mercer) were the debtor commenced business as an accountant 25 years ago at Ipswich, without capital. Subsequently, he also traded as an auctioneer and estate agent. In February, 1899, he removed to Seven Kings, Ilford, and traded under the style of Baxter and Son, but his son, who is only 18, had no interest in the business. The only book of account kept was a rough cash-book, which debtor admitted had not been fully entered. No ledger had been kept, nor had any trading accounts or balance-sheets been prepared with the exception of a statement of assets and liabilities made out about three or four months ago, which statement he stated showed that he was solvent. At the date of the receiving order, four actions were pending against the debtor. Execution was levied in September last by another creditor, but the debt and costs were paid. An action of slander had been commenced by the debtor against a certain person. Of the debtor’s unsecured liabilities £147 is in respect of money lent and interest, £50 law costs, the remainder being for trade debts and personal expenses. – The Official Receiver mentioned the furniture had raised £88, but a guarantee of £25 was given for the rent. He expressed the opinion that £100 a-year was an enormous rent to pay for a new place like Seven Kings, which was too new a place to work a business up. He also referred to the action for slander which the debtor had pending against the agent. – The debtor: When I get the damages I will pay everyone 20s. in the £. – The Official Receiver: People don’t get very heavy damages for slander. – Debtor added that the action of the agent had destroyed his business. – The estate will be wound up by the Official Receiver in the ordinary way. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 04 Jan 1876 | Petty Session Report Ipswich A Neighbours’ Quarrel.- Edward Baxter, labourer, was summoned for assaulting James Adkins, on December 29th, and complainant also asked that defendant might be called upon to find sureties of the peace. Mr. Hill appeared for the complainant. Both parties live in Holy Wells Road, opposite the Gas Works, and on Friday the defendant went to complainant’s house, saw complainant, and asked what he had to say about him and his wife. Complainant said he did not want to have anything to say to him. Defendant then struck complainant’s wife, and afterwards his father and complainant going to his assistance defendant assaulted him also, and subsequently threatened him. Defendant said matter arose from a quarrel between complaint’s mother and his (defendant’s) wife in the morning. Complainant consented to withdraw the case on defendant paying the expenses and being bound over in £10 to keep the peace for 12 months. |

Between twelve and one on Saturday night defendant came home drunk, and threatened to cut her throat. He turned her out, and she had been in lodgings ever since. – At the Mayer’s suggestion, defendant consented to be bound over. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 09 Jul 1878 | Petty Session Reports Ipswich Robbery from the Person by a Child. – Henry C. Cook, a little boy, ten years of age, living with his parents in Hamilton Street, Victoria Street, was charged with stealing 4s. 6d. in silver money, from the person of a child named Charles Alfred Baxter. The child Baxter is the son of Charles George Baxter, landlord of the Bold Crispin Inn, Rope Walk. His mother is a tailoress, and works for Mr. Alston, of the Butter Market, and on the day in question she sent him to Mr. Alston’s with some work, for which she expected him to bring home 7s. The money was given to him and placed in his pockets, and he started for home. When near the Theatre the child met Cook, who asked him if he had got any money, and on his replying that he had the prisoner put his hand in Baxter’s pocket and took out 4s 6d., and ran off with it. Suspicion being directed towards the prisoner, Mrs Baxter called at his parents’ house; and Policeman Porter found that he had been spending money very freely, and being bought before the child Baxter, the latter at once recognised him as the boy who had taken the money from his pocket. Prisoner pleaded guilty. The Chairman said that this was not prisoner’s first offence, and he regretted that the Magistrates had not the power to order him a whipping. He would now be sentenced to 14 days imprisonment, and unless he altered his evil course he would be contained in a reformatory school. |

| The Ipswich Journal | 30 Jan 1892 | IPSWICH POLICE COURT. MONDAY. Before the Mayor (D Ford Goddard, Esq), in the chair, Alfred Wrinch, Esq., R. M, Miller, Esq., and Col. J. H. Josselyn. A SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A FATHER.-Edward Chas Baxter, labourer, Wingfield Street, was charged a with an attempted felonious assault upon hit daughter, Elizabeth Annie Baxter, aged 15 years.-Mr. H. K. Moseley (instructed by the N.S.P.C.C.) prosecuted, and a Mr. John Mills defended.-Mr. Moseley, in opening the, case, remarked that the complainant, by her outward appearance looked much older, but he had a certificate of her birth, which stated that she was born on the 28th November, 1876. The present charge was taken under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and he asked that the defendant should he committed to take his trial. He called the complainant, who stated that she was 15 years old. About eight o’clock on the morning of the 6th inst., her father came to see her at Mrs. Ruffle’s, Alan Road, where she was employed as a general servant. She said to him, “What have you come for?” He said he wanted to know whether she went out on the Sunday. She replied, “No.” He then put his arm round her neck and kissed her. He pulled her into the kitchen, and tried to push her down. She screamed, and a neighbour, named Mrs. Whitam, came to the door, and her father hid himself in the keeping-room. Mrs. Whitam did not stop above a minute. Her father then pushed her down, and committed the assault complained of. She screamed, and he put his hand over her mouth. She said she would tell her mother, and defendant, replied “No doubt.” Witness never made any complaint to her mistress that day, because she was ill. The next day she complained to her mistress, and the same afternoon she obtained a warrant for the defendant’s apprehension. The complainant was cross examined at length by Mr. Mills, the most important facts being that her parents had often reproved her with reference to going about with men and boys. -Police-constable Catchpole said the defendant made no reply in answer to the charge – Police-sergeant Grimwood said the ‘defendant’s wife came to see her husband whilst he was in custody at the Police Station on the 8th instant. Witness heard her say to him “What did you go there for” Defendant said he could not talk the matter over there. She repeated the question several times, and he said. “I went there to see her about that affair. I knocked her down, and that was all I did. As to the rest, it is false. I was watching her all day Sunday.”-Mr. Moseley asked that the case might be adjourned for a week, as he had two important witnesses to call, who were unable to come through illness. He had got all the facts of the case it was possible to produce that day, in order that the defendant, who had been several times remanded, might see the nature of the charge. Magistrates granted the application, bail being accepted as before, defendant in £10 and one surety of £5. |

| Ipswich Journal | 14 Jul 1894 | ENVELOPED IN FLAMES. TERRIBLE DEATH OF AN IPSWICH SERVANT. A VICTIM OF INEXPERIENCE, An inquest was held on Monday afternoon at the East Suffolk Hospital, before the deputy-coroner (W. B. Jackaman, Esq.), relative to the death of Annie Baxter, aged 17, daughter of Edward Charles and Caroline Baxter, residing at 41, Beck Street, whose death occurred on the previous evening at that institution- Deceased’s mother said she saw her daughter on Sunday at the Hospital. She was conscious, but made no statement as to how she got the burns which ended in her death. – Witness had never used an oil stove in her house, and deceased had no experience in regard to them.-Mrs. Lockwood, landlady of the Lifeboat Inn, Wherstead road, said deceased had been in her service as general servant about three mouths. On Friday week, by her directions, deceased purchased an oil stove, and had used it for cooking every day since. She attended to the trimming of it, telling witness she had experience in the past of similar stoves. On Saturday, after cooking, witness told her to leave the stove for a time before refilling it. She gave her this advice because deceased had on a previous occasion filled the stove when warm, and had complained that “it popped up” and frightened her. Witness did not know whether by “it” she meant the flame. Instead of acting upon her advice deceased within three minutes refilled the stove, and witness heard screams and saw her ALL IN FLAMES rushing into a passage. Witness threw a rug upon her, but she rushed into the yard. She was subsequently removed to the Hospital.-Mr. B. W. Brogden, surgeon, said whilst passing the Lifeboat he was called in. Deceased’s burns had been dressed with oil, and he advised her removal to the Hospital. Deceased was severely burnt, especially about the lower extremities. He was of opinion that death resulted from shock consequent upon the extensive burns.-Mr. Jno. L. Dalby, house-surgeon at the Hospital, agreed with this evidence. – Robert Smith (deceased’s young men) called at the Lifeboat for refreshment. He visited the yard, and whilst passing an out-house deceased, who was standing near the stove called to him, and he understood her to say, “Will you fill this for me?”. He imagined she was referring to the stove. About two minutes afterwards he heard something (believed to be the oil can) dropped upon the floor and calls for help. He then saw deceased all in flames, and rendered all the assistance he could. He also put out the stove, which was all ablaze, and also the flames all over the floor. – Jane Snelling, 335, Wherstead Road, who helped to dress the deceased’s wounds, and accompanied her in the cab to the Hospital, said deceased told her the saucepan containing potatoes did not quite boil, and as the stove was apparently going out, she picked up the oil can and began to fill it. The stove immediately “flew on fire.” She bounced the can down, and the oil spreading over her clothing set it on fire. She admitted her mistress instructed her not to re-trim the stove until after dinner. – The Jury returned a verdict of “Accidental death,” and expressed the desire, through the medium of the Press, to impress upon the public the necessity for exercising every care and attention in the use of these stoves. |

Julia Annie Baxter (1870 – 1951)

Julia married Charles Grayston (1870 – 1942) the son of Ellis Grayston and Louisa Miller, in 1898.
From information I have found, Julia left her husband and on the 23rd June 1912 travelled to Quebec Canada with her three young children, Nellie (Helen, 1903-1986), Annie (Anne 1905-1947) and Katie (Kathleen, 1908). Her passage paid by her brother-in-law (Robert Knibbs) and she joined her brother, Arthur and her sister, Mary already living in Toronto. Immigration records from September and October 1912 showed Julia travelled to Sault Ste Marie Chippewa Michigan to visit Levi Knibbs, then a widow, and a brother of Robert Knibbs. Julia was described as one and a half meters tall (4ft 11) of dark completion with brown hair and brown eyes, who came to visit and may remain.
I lose the family for a while, but found them again in 1925. On the 21st July, of that year, Helen Grayston the daughter of Charles Grayston and Julia Annie Baxter married Frank Sydney Hammond May, in Toronto, York, Ontario. The brides address and that of her sister Kathleen Grayston was given as 38 Frater Avenue, Toronto. I assume this was where Julia based herself
Julia made one recorded visit to the UK, returning on the 12th June 1932 to stay with her widowed sister-in-law Nellie and her nephew’s at 106 Pretoria Avenue, Walthamstow. Julia returned to Canada on the 20th August, 1932. Julia died in 1951 and was buried at Prospect Cemetery, Section 26, Lot 908 along with daughters Helen May and Ann Grayston.
