Baxters of Beccles

Beccles

Beccles is mainly a Georgian town built on the river Waverney. It was once a busy port with lock free access to the sea. Industry included a large print works and farming. The town was rebuilt after four great fires in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. The church is dedicated to St Michael, the interior of which was destroyed by fire in 1586; the parish registers date back to that year.

Early Baxters

Beccles is on the navigable river Waverney and at the time was a commercial hub of activity, which may explain the appearance and disappearance of the various Baxter families that lived in Beccles during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Where ever possible I have attempted to maintain family groupings. At the end I have provided a list of baptism, marriages and burials which have no family connection to each other.

John (? - 1694) and Mary Baxter (? - 1710/1711)

01 Mar 1685 Frances* Parish church of Beccles
07 Oct 1688 Nicholas* Parish church of Beccles
10 Apr 1692 Henry* Parish church of Beccles

*There is a gap between the births of Abilon and Sarah so it is possible that Sarah, Frances, Nicholas and Henry are the children of another Baxter couple called John and Mary.

This action was brought by the plaintiff, who is a shoemaker living at Halesworth, for a trespass alleged to be committed by the defendants, one of whom is an Excise Officer, the others are an auctioneer and his agents, in having taken property under the Hawkers’ and Peddlers’ Act.  On the part of the defendants, it was proved, that a servant of plaintiff, Kersey, who was in possession of the goods at the time, was convicted before Mr. Sparrow, one of the Magistrates of this County, for hawking, the same about; and that they were seized under a warrant to dispose of Kersey’s property, in default of non-payment of the penalty.  The Judge, Mr Serjeant Busanquet, intimated that the only question for the Jury was, as to the question of damages; leaving the law of the case, whether the seizure was legal, to be argued in the court above.

On the 31st July, at the parish church, Beccles, by the Rev C. H. Shaw, George Baxter, railway guard, to Eliza Brown.
The Ipswich Journal 13 Oct 1874
Petty Sessions – Beccles
Assaulting a railway porter – Stephen Cooper apprentice to Mr W. Moore printer, was summoned by George Baxter, for assaulting him on the 29th of August last.
Inspector Robertson, from Bishopgate Station said the case had been reported to the Superintendent, and the Company ordered the summons to be issued; the delay in issuing the summons was unavoidable.
George Baxter said he was on duty at Beccles station on the 29th August, and soon after 11 o’clock at night a special train came up from Lowestoft, bring Mr. Moore’s men on their return from an annual excursion; from information he received he asked Cooper for his ticket, not having one, he told him he must pay; he said he would do so the following day, and was allowed to go away.  A few minutes after Cooper returned, paid the fare and said he would break his neck and his master’s too.  Defendant then struck him, after which some companions took him away.  Cooper went to plaintiff’s house on the Sunday to apologies.  He told him to go to the Station Master.
In reply to defendant, witness said “You chucked me round and struck me,”
John Gooch, a railway porter gave corroborative evidence, and in reply to defendant said he saw him strike Baxter and chuck him round.
Cooper in defense said he has been to a wazzegoose at Lowestoft, and returned without a ticket, and was allowed to pass on promising to pay the fare.  He denied striking the plaintiff.
Defendant was fined 17s 6d or seven days imprisonment.  Fine was paid.

Marriage

Martha married Alfred Fisher (1850 - 1924), the son of James and Mary Fisher in 1885.

Mary Ann (Ellen Matilda) Baxter (1851 - ?)

It would appear that both Martha and Mary Ann attended The House of Mercy, Ditchingham, Norfolk where they received training as domestic servants. Both Martha and Mary Ann were baptized as adults and they were able to choose additional middle names not registered on their birth certificates. Martha choose Gladys, whereas Mary Ann seems to have decided to change her name completely to Ellen Matilda. This has made tracing Mary Ann very difficult, I found her in the 1871 census, but after this I loose her. She is not the Ellen Matilda Baxter that married Jonas Chambers in the Hoxne district, this Ellen was born in 1855 Tannington, the daughter of John Baxter and Eliza Stoggins.

I ran after them up the new road by Mr Bland's house [Fredericks Road] & picked up some strawberries. [Mr Baxter's evidence "The day the boys were in the garden was the day before the Races in the meadow near the Black Boy - on Wednesday"] Given three months hard labour.
