Baxters of Barnby

Barnby

Barnby is a village along the main road between Beccles and Lowestoft and situated one mile East of North Cove. It is a small agricultural community, one mile from the navigable river Waverney. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, an ancient structure with a thatched roof. The church register's date back to the Tudor times. The only pub in the village is the Swan.

Early Baxters

Although Baxter families are mentioned in the church registers of Barnby in the 1600, this is in reference to Baxters living in Mutford. This is because the church livings of Barnby and Mutford were once linked. The first reference to the Baxters in Barnby comes in 1746, "Buried January 24 1746 Richard Baxter a married man." Who Richard Baxter was I'm not sure, he could; possible be brother of Nicholas Baxter of North Cove. The Baxter surname is not mentioned again in the parish records until the nineteenth century.

Frances Baxter (1733 - 1794)

Frances and her husband Samuel Niker (c.1729 - 1810) settled in Barnby in the late 1750s. Their marriage takes place in Uggeshall, but there is no evidence as yet to prove that Frances was related to the Uggeshall Baxters and her presence there may be a coincidence. I believe I may have found Frances, she was the daughter of John Baxter (1708 - 1737) and Sarah Dawkins (d. 1739) baptized 08 Jul 1733, Ashby St Mary (near Buckenham), Norfolk. John in turn was the son of John Baxter and Susan Slade, born Tasburgh, Norfolk. Frances was an orphan by the age of 6.

Frances was possibly first cousins with Robert Baxter (1729 - 1798) who settled in Kessingland.

Marriage

From the parish registers of Uggeshall:

"Samuel Niker of this parish single man and Frances Baxter of the same spinster married in this church by banns this tenth day of October 1754, in the presence of Eliza London and James Ellis."

Nineteenth Century Baxters

The Baxters that arrive in Barnby come from other Baxter families well established in the area.

What happened to the children of William Baxter and Jemima Lewis of Barnby?

William Lewis Baxter (1826 – 1884)

William Baxter is recorded as a pensioner soldier, which would explain his long absence for the area. He married late in life and settled in North Cove and had no children.

Marriage

William married Sarah Ann Cook (1824 - 1901) the daughter of John Money and Charity Reynolds. This was Sarah's second marriage.

Committed to the county gaol an House of Correction, Wm Crow, John Spore, Lewis Baxter, and James Cutting, for absenting themselves from a fishing boat in Lowestoft: each 21 days
Ipswich Journal 01 Nov 1962
Lowestoft Petty Sessions, October 29th
John Spore, W. Crowe, James cutting and Lewis Baxter, belonging to the fishing lugger “Young Richard” and now had returned from 3 weeks imprisonment under the law Act relating to fishing boats, applied to the bench for advice.
It appeared that on the term of their imprisonment expiring they had gone to the owner of the lugger and requested to be allowed to finish the voyage, but were told that he (the owner) would have nothing to do with them.
The clerk said he has met the men on the previous day on their return, and he advised them to go and tender their services to the owner.  He presumed that the owner had shipped other men in their place.  After some further conversation.
The Chairman informed the men that the Bench could not interfere in the matter, as it was one of £. S. d. and belonging to the County Court.  They had better go to some solicitor who would advise them how to proceed.  The bench had no jurisdiction.  (The men had shipped to the 24th December next)
